As automakers have widely adopted electric vehicles over the last number of years, other companies are still looking for additional alternative power sources. That’s where Hyperion Motorcars comes into play. Founded in Ohio in 2o11, the company was made up of automotive and aerospace engineers who had a focus on alternative energy sources.
What is the Hyperion XP-1?
10 years and over 350 scientists later, the first XP-1 Prototype was unveiled to the world. Powered by Hydrogen, the Hyperion XP-1 stores electric energy via fuel cell systems rather than heavy lithium-ion batteries, like other EVs. The hydrogen fuel cell power plant, which Hyperion refers to as the “HyperCell” works with ultra-capacitors to produce 2,038 horsepower to all four wheels with four electric motors. Hyperion claims a zero-to-60mph time of 2.2 seconds and top speed over 220mph. The XP-1 also features solar “air blades” that adjust with the position of the sun and help improve handling at high speeds. The streamlined rear expels a jet stream of water vapor, the only emission from hydrogen.
Hyperion XP-1 Range
A combination of technologies like hydrogen fuel cells, high pressure electrolysis, molecular storage systems, and even jet propulsion help the XP-1 achieve a range of 1,000 miles. Despite looking like a heavy car, the Hyperion weighs 2,275 pounds, which is inline with the average gas-powered car. Hyperion has plans to roll out charging infrastructure across the United States. However, with an estimated 1,000 mile range, less charging stations will be needed.
Pricing and Production
While very cool, this is not the first hydrogen powered car available to the public. Toyota has long made the Mirai, which is still on sale today for just over $50,000. However, the only similarity between the XP-1 and the Toyota Mirai would be their ability to run on hydrogen. The XP-1 is no commuter car, nor will it be easily available to the public. With only 300 units planned for production and an MSRP of over $2,000,000, only a lucky few will ever see one, let alone own one.
