Hummer EV

Have You Seen A Hummer EV?

It’s been just about 3-years since the Hummer EV went into production at GMCs Hamtramck Assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan, yet the standout truck has been seen by few. So what’s going on with the Hummer EV, and where are they?

Production Issues:

Since its arrival in 2021, GMC has struggled to churn out the newly revived Hummer for a variety of reasons. One of those issues was battery assembly production. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, announced in August of 2023 that an unnamed supplier was not meeting delivery expectations for automation equipment that was needed for battery assembly.

Next came the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike that saw a 6-week work stoppage at GM plants. Two months total of production were also paused in 2021 and 2022 while GM worked to retrofit the Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant with improved equipment. From when production first started in 2021 to June of 2023, the average production rate of the Hummer EV was slightly over 680 units per month.

Sales:

With the different production delays stated above, deliveries were far and few between. In the early parts of 2022, GM managed to sell just over 30 Hummers per month from January to March. That number ever so slightly jumped to above 90 from April to June before finally reaching triple digits in the later summer months. With so few being made, it was near impossible to find one at or near the MSRP. If you follow Bring A Trailer, you’ll most likely remember the run of Hummer EVs that were sold for just under $200,000.

2023 started slow, with GM selling under 20 Hummers per month for the first half the the year. GM finally saw the biggest bump in sales yet come the later summer months to just under 400 units per month.

A Reason to be Hopeful:

2024 looks to be promising for GM and the Hummer EV as the brand seems to have figured out production delays. The 2024 models now have two trim levels for the pick-up. The EV1x with a lower MSRP of $98,000 and the EV3x starting at $107,000. The Edition 1 is no longer available. Additionally, the SUV version is in full production and has four trim levels to pick from. The lowest buy in price for any new Hummer EV comes with the SUV’s EV2 that has a starting price of about $80,000. The EV2x jumps up to $98,000 while the Edition 1 and EV3x make the climb to triple digits at just under $108,000. With better production and more trim levels available, look to see more Hummers out on the road this year.
