Opinion: The McLaren 720s signals a new era in Supercars

It’s no secret- Mclaren has quickly climbed the ranks putting out some of the best road going supercars. After producing the legendary McLaren F1  (in my opinion, the greatest car ever made) throughout the 1990’s, McLaren was absent from the street-legal supercar market. Manufacturers such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and many others seemed to be the go-to brands for the super wealthy who wanted to go super fast in extraordinary style.

In 2011, McLaren made a reappearance when the MP4-12C hit the market. The sleek looking supercar had a 3.8L twin-turbo V8 pumping out about 590horsepower. McLaren had quickly captured the attention of car enthusiasts who were still in love with the brand due to the F1’s legacy. Then, in 2013 came McLaren’s biggest push into the street-legal supercar market with the release of the million-dollar P1. Exquisite styling, monstrous power and state-of-the-art technology put the P1 and McLaren at the top of the supercar world competing directly with hyper-cars from Porsche and Ferrari.

Fast forward to the present day and McLaren has a very impressive lineup. The 12C is no more but McLaren now has the the 650s, 675LT, and the 570s (540s outside the U.S.). McLaren and the P1 were still dominating the game but the supercar industry had rapidly changed from decades before. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and other manufacturers were putting out cars at an astronomical rate. No longer would a model be offered for 10+ years but instead cars would last about 4-5 years before getting rebranded and refreshed into something faster and better looking than the previous generation. This is where the all new 2018 McLaren 720s comes into play.

The unique styling caught the world by storm. Some, weary of the new look and others in  love (the car looks much better in person than in photos). Put styling aside for a minute though and focus on performance. The 4.0L twin-turbo V8 makes an impressive 710horsepower (almost 50hp more than Ferrari’s 488GTB). The 720s will propel to 0-60mph in a blistering fast 2.8 seconds and will max out at 212mph. All for a very reasonable $288,000 USD.

There is one issue though- these are the performance numbers on paper. Ask anyone who has driven the 720s (or has put the car on the Dyno) and they will tell you that there is no way McLaren is being ‘honest’ with the performance numbers- but not in a bad way. Almost every reviewer of the supercar says the 720s is faster than the 900hp P1. Keep in mind, the P1 was made to be McLaren’s fastest, most extreme car in their offered lineup and today fetches a price tag well over $1,000,000 USD.

The P1, with a top speed of 217mph, was apart of what car enthusiasts called the ‘Hyper 3’ which included the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder. All three cars had both gasoline and battery powered engines that were obliterating any other supercar on the street (with few exceptions), which is why we refer to them as ‘hyper-cars’. So how could McLaren put out a car that costs nearly $800,000 less and go faster than a P1? The answer is simple- technology. Although the 720s is only 5 years newer than the P1, supercar technology is rapidly improving. From more carbon fiber and better aero among many things, the technology in late 2017, early 2018 has allowed McLaren to surpass the P1. So why isn’t McLaren being honest about the performance? Well, how would you feel if you spent well over $1,000,000 on a P1 just to have a $288,000 car be faster? Understandably so, McLaren does not want to piss off it’s most loyal, highest spending customers so for now, the McLaren P1 remains ‘faster’ than the 720s.

What all of this means for the future of supercars is that the once thought to be impassible performance numbers on the Hyper 3 is already becoming outdated technology. If McLaren can put out a car like the 720s, we know others like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche are soon to follow. They Hyper 3 had a short, yet successful run of being the worlds most extreme hyper-cars, but the tide is changing and a new era of extreme performance and better technology will soon be taking over.

Why the Porsche 986 Boxster is the Perfect Entry-Level Sports Car

In 2003, a black Porsche 986 Boxster rolled off the assembly line and hit the streets. Eleven years and 64,000 miles later, this Porsche became mine. The tiny entry-level two-seater sports car has a long lineage of being one of Porsche’s most popular models- and for good reason. Unlike other models such as the 911, Cayenne and Panamera, the Boxster is not only easier to maintain but is also cheaper. The Boxster is a great starter car for those looking to enter not only the Porsche market but also the exotic car world and here’s why:

It’s cheap. A 2003 Boxster can easily be had for under $10,000. When you consider what the Porsche brand is and the prestige it represents, the entry cost is far less than rival brands like Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari. For example, to get into a Lamborghini, you’re looking at a price of at least $80,000- and that would be considered an amazing deal. An entry to the Ferrari brand could occasionally be done for around $30,000 for a model a few decades old. Entry to Maserati can come at a reasonable price range of $17,000-$20,000.

The next factor relates back to the price, and that is the maintenance. Like the low price, the Boxster has a relatively low maintenance cost. An oil change can be accomplished for about $120, new brakes for around $700 and a new clutch for $3,000. Those prices are more than your average car but the Boxster and the Porsche brand are far from average. The 986 Boxster is also a very reliable car and needs far less regular maintenance than other entry-level cars from rival companies.

The last reason why this Porsche is the perfect entry–level sports car is the Stuttgart, Germany crafted engine. The 986 Boxster and Boxster S are certainly no competitors of high performance sports cars with the latter of the two boasting the more powerful 3.2L Flat 6 making 258hp. The 986 without the ‘S’ package (the model I currently drive) have the smaller 2.7L Flat 6 producing 227hp. These may not be staggering numbers but the soft rumble of the German Flat 6 and the gear changes of the 5 speed manual (or PDK Automatic) transmission will bring joy to any car enthusiast. While the car may be underpowered, the handling is pure Porsche perfection and will not disappoint.

The Porsche Boxster has been a coveted car in the Porsche brand since it’s introduction in the late 1990’s. For under $10,000 you can get behind the wheel of car built by the same company that gave the world some of the best cars ever produced in the Carrera GT, 918 Spyder and GT3 RS. If you’re looking to enter into the Porsche brand or the exotic car world, the Porsche 986 Boxster and Boxster S are great considerations.

The past month or so in New York has been cold and filled with snow; so what better time than now to uncover my Porsche and drive around town for a photo-shoot. Just a few days after a relatively big snow storm the little RWD sportscar took to the streets amongst the pickup trucks and snow plows. This is not a review of the car (that will be coming soon), but I must admit the Boxster had absolutely no issues on the wet streets. Of course, if I put my foot down a little extra on a turn, the back, and occasionally the front, did slide out. Keep in mind this is the base model Boxster powered by a 2.7L H6 engine that produces about 227 horsepower. The Porsche could have used a nice wash before the shoot, but I’ll wait until Spring arrives for that. As always feel free to comment on pictures.

Prius or Tesla: Which Is The Future?

There is no escaping the fact that strict worldwide emissions regulations are forcing automakers to think really far out of the box with ideas on how to power their vehicles.

The Prius, although officially a Toyota model since 1997, took the world by storm in 2003 when the all new redesigned car got 60mpg city and 51mpg highway. At the time that was pretty much unheard of in the U.S. market. Rising gas prices ramped up the Prius’s popularity and by 2009 over 1million Prius’s had been sold worldwide.

During the Prius’s reign no automakers were able to match the cars sales and over all specifications. Elon Musk, founder of Pay-Pal, was trying to create a vehicle that like the Prius, would be environmentally friendly. Musk wanted to prove to the world that hybrid cars could actually have better performance than gas-powered vehicles.

What was the problem with the Prius? Well just look at it. It’s not exactly the most sexy, sleek vehicle with good performance numbers. This left the Prius to not only being wildly popular, but also wildly laughed at. The car had earned its reputation to be the “nerds” car and carried many other stigmas. If hybrid cars had to be the thing of the future, the Prius would represent a scary, ugly and very slow future for cars.

Also founded in 2003, Musk created the company Tesla; named after the famous inventor Nikola Tesla. Little did anyone know this would be the beginning of the end for the Toyota Prius. In 2008 the first production Tesla hit the streets. The Tesla Roadster was a $100,000 sports car, the polar opposite of the Prius. They shared almost nothing in common and they shouldn’t have anyway. It wasn’t until 2012 that the Prius would meet its match.

In 2012 Tesla unveiled the 4-door Model S. The car was the worlds first fully electric sedan. Getting 265 miles per charge was still pretty different from the Prius’s high gas mileage. There were practically no charging stations on public roads, and most people still didn’t want be paying close to $100,000 for this premium sedan. Toyota had continued success with the Prius  but the car had managed to get uglier and uglier throughout the years spawning more and more stigmas.

Fast forward to present day 2015 and the newly released 2016 Toyota Prius may just be one of the worst looking vehicles to come out of the Toyota factory. Tesla, however, is seeing monstrous growth among the Model S. The car not only looks sexy and sleek, but it has sports car performance. In 2012, a Model S could hit 60mph from a standstill in just 5 seconds while the 2012 Prius took 10.5 seconds. Today the highest optioned Model S will do 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds while the highest optioned Prius will hit 60mph in about 10 seconds flat.

The latest Model S still has a hefty price tag of $67,000 while the latest Prius is only $24,200 (early model Prius’s were over $30,000). So how does that huge gap in price mean the death of the Prius model? Well the Model S is soon to have a sibling. Musk has promised a more affordable Tesla in the very near future. Musk wants a car that the average person can afford and still receive the gas saving and technological benefits. That is where the death of the Prius is set to begin.

Toyota feels the threat and knows that Prius has become the bud of many jokes and went for a big redesign for the 2016 model in hopes to boost sales. Toyota was saying that the new Prius would be more streamlined, sleek, sexy and sporty. Well to put it simply, they failed and did so miserably. The car is perhaps the worst looking generation the Prius has seen. Tesla, however, still has the sleek, sexy lines and the performance numbers that could make an environmentalist smile to ear to ear and make a Ferrari owner envious.

So which is the hybrid of the future? Tesla. The Toyota Prius is a dying breed. The once extremely safe, eco-friendly Prius has been out done by the Model S, which has received many awards for being the single safest vehicle on the road today. The technology in the Model S compared to the Prius would be like comparing a flip-phone to an iPhone. The performance differences are like comparing a cheetah to a sloth. Comparing which one is better for the environment would be like comparing a 4 cylinder to V12. Tesla will be the future for those reasons. The Prius has still yet to fully leave gasoline in all of its options. Tesla continues to show that full electric power is easy to access, way more powerful and way more efficient.

Tesla super charging stations have reached an astronomical number not only the United States but worldwide. The death of the Prius will be slow, but as genius Elon Musk continues to shock the world with inventions you can guarantee a more affordable Tesla to be hitting the streets in the very near future. Until that day, Pruis sales will continue since the price is great. If Toyota continues to make ugly Prius’s with outdated and overrated technology than the soon-to-come affordable Tesla will simply take over.

With a busy New York summer coming to an end it’s time to take a look at one of my favorite cars I’ve had the opportunity to drive. At the beginning of summer I sold my uncle a triple black 2005 (997) Porsche 911 Carrera. This Porsche was far from stock, boasting about $15,000 in upgrades from FabSpeed. The upgrades include exhaust and a carbon fiber air intake. Needless to say the car is extremely loud and grabs attention anywhere it goes. I had the privilege to drive it around for a few days and take it to shows throughout the summer. While having the super car I took photographs on my iPhone6 to document my journeys. Hellcat Halted

Don’t panic—the production of the Dodge Hellcat Charger and Challenger was not halted due to a lack of sales. In fact, Dodge stated in its blog this week it’s no longer taking orders for the 707hp muscle car because it’s too behind on orders.

According to an article from Road and Track, about 2,200 cars have been delivered worldwide—which includes both the 2-door Challenger and the 4-door Charger. More than 9,000 orders have been placed in recent months for the extreme muscle cars.

Fiat Chrysler, which owns Dodge and the SRT division has warned potential customers that certain dealerships have been accepting deposits for the Hellcat without actually having permission from Dodge to do so. Dealerships have been allocated one Hellcat per month. Dealerships must also pay a fine if an unsold Hellcat sits on the lot for more than five days. There have been reports that some dealerships have accepted $5,000 non-refundable deposits on cars they cannot fulfill the order for.

It is unclear how long production will be halted, but one would assume that Dodge will take advantage of the increased demand and hold off on new orders until others have been filled. With demand so strong, and no new orders being taken, it will be interesting to see what will happen to the value of already delivered Hellcats.

The Hellcat Challenger comes with a reasonable base price of $59,995 and the 4-door Charger starts at $63,995. Both vehicles get their power from a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine that makes an astonishing 707hp. For the price, there may not be a better, more powerful car out there. A new Lamborghini Aventador packs 700hp and has a starting price of almost $500,000; although both cars offer different types of extremes.

The Charger wears the crown when it comes to the world of powerful sedans, which has been an increasingly popular market. The car holds a record-setting top speed for a sedan of a blistering fast 204 mph (yes, it’s been proven) and holds the record for the fastest quarter mile by a sedan at 11 seconds.

The Challenger has a top speed of a very fast 199 mph, a 0-60mph in the low three-second range and runs a 10.8 second quarter mile. Surprisingly, the car manages to get 22 mpg despite the massive power output.

To allow for easier daily driving, the Hellcat models come with two different key fobs. One key fob restricts the engines power output to “just” 500hp, while the second key will unleash all 707hp.

According to CNN, Challenger sales are up 60%, while Charger sales have increased 23% for January and February. This leads me to believe Dodge has won the battle of the revival of the muscle cars between Dodge, Ford and Chevrolet. Although successful, sales numbers for the Mustang and Camaro don’t come close to matching that of the Hellcat. Also consider the fact that the Hellcat models are the fastest production muscle cars in the world right now for a very reasonable price. Will Chevy and Ford catch up? Will the Hellcat model duo have any competition in the near future? Only time will tell.

The McLaren F1 LM Revealed

As a car enthusiast there is always one question that is asked in conversion—what is your favorite car? I have been asked this question countless times by so many people and my answer has never changed. Of course, the Lamborghini Murcielago, Enzo Ferrari and Maserati MC12 come to mind, but one super-car stands tall above the rest—the 1995 McLaren F1 LM.

Produced by the legendary racing company McLaren, the F1 LM is an extremely limited-edition version of the already insane F1 and F1 GTR. The F1 LM has modifications from the track only F1 GTR to make it street-legal.

It all started in 1992 when Gordon Murray designed and produced the original McLaren F1 that would be allowed on public roads. McLaren had already more than proven itself on the track, but could it compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini which were already having great success producing street cars? Well, the answer was yes. It did more than compete; it absolutely tore up any competition. From 1992 to 1998 only 106 F1 cars rolled off the assembly line in Woking, Surrey, England; only five F1 LM’s were produced. Before we even get to the performance specs, the production number instantly adds huge value to the car.

The more “common” McLaren F1 boasts incredibly impressive design, power and handling. BMW and the M Sport division built Murray a custom 6.1L V12 engine called the BMW S70/8. Producing 627 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque the F1 will reach 60 mph in a blistering 3.2 seconds, 100 mph in just 6.3 seconds and will top out at 248 mph. As one can imagine, these are unheard of numbers in the nineties, and the vehicle quickly became the worlds fastest street-legal car and held the title until 2005. The naturally aspirated engine sits in Carbon Fiber body panels surrounded by gold foil for heat insulation. A reported 16 grams of gold was used in each McLaren. The limited F1 LM uses the same engine as the track-only F1 GTR; a naturally aspirated V12 producing 680 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. The F1 LM will scream to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, 100 mph in 5.9 seconds and has a max speed of 243 mph. The top speed is lower on the the LM due to added aerodynamic drag.

Pop-open the enormous gull-wing doors and you’ll be quite surprised when you notice where the drivers seat is. Murray designed the cars to have the drivers seat in the middle of the car; this gives the driver a more complete F1 racing experience. It not only positions the driver in the same spot as if in a real F1 car, but it allows for much better views of the road in front. Sitting just behind and to the side of the drivers seat are two passenger seats. Yes, this astonishing super-car has room for three passengers. To make things even more intense, it’s recommended both the driver and passengers wear headphones to allow communication to the other passengers during a ride. This is due to the monstrous noise the engine makes. To save weight, little to no insulation was used to keep out the V12’s roar.

All five McLaren F1 LM’s produced were painted Papaya Orange to honor Bruce McLaren and the color of his race car. There is in fact a sixth version of the LM called the XP1 LM (also painted in Papaya Orange) that is owned by McLaren and remains in the factory. The car was original promised to Lewis Hamilton, McLaren’s F1 team driver if he won two world championships. Hamilton left the company in 2013 to join Mercedes-Benz after winning one world championship. Rumors have it that the car today is valued at over $4,000,000.

This super-car came far from stripped down; Murray wanted to give drivers comfort as well as performance. Each vehicle came with a specially designed lightweight 10 disc Kenwood sound system that was specifically made to tailor to the buyers music preferences. The cars do not have a radio however because Murray said that he himself barely ever listened to it. The cars also surprisingly come with air conditioning, window defrosters, electric windows and remote control locking. Inside the cabin the lucky owner will find button releases for outside panel access, a storage compartment,and courtesy lights. Also included is a gold plated tool kit, high performance headlights and reverse/fog lights.

Upon purchasing the record-setting vehicle each buyer received a custom edition Tag Heuer Chronometer wristwatch. Each car was specifically produced to the buyers’ needs and wants. McLaren flew out all the buyers to have the seats custom fit to the their body types. The seats are also non-adjustable because they too are specifically set for the driver’s ideal driving position. This of course makes finding a used F1 that much more difficult if you plan to drive it (which I hope you would).

The value of the McLaren F1 and F1 LM have skyrocketed above its original price tag of just under $1,000,000. In 2008 a McLaren F1 was sold for about $4,000,000 and in 2012 at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance chassis number 066 was sold for a record breaking $8,400,700. Although it is difficult to find an owner willing to give up one of these masterpieces, many have been offered for sale fetching from $4,000,000 all the way to $10,000,000 and above for the F1 LM. McLaren will not release the names of the owners to the public but it is known that famous designer Ralph Lauren has a collection of the cars in his personal garage. There is no doubt that the price of these cars will continue to grow in the future.

Today, it is extremely rare to see one of these monsters on public streets. I have only seen three in person and yet this has been my favorite car since I was young. My first sighting came over ten years ago at the New York International Auto Show when Mercedes-Benz had a black F1 on display. A few years a later I spotted the insanely rare F1 LM in its beautiful Papaya Orange crossing over the George Washington Bridge here in New York/New Jersey. My latest sighting came on the Long Island Expressway here in New York as a white F1 flew by just a few years ago. Unfortunately, all three sightings came and went so fast that I was unable to snap a picture. Contrary to popular thought that McLaren would never put out a “newer” F1, they did. The McLaren P1 debuted in 2012 and was limited to just 375 units. All units were sold out by November 2013 at a price of $1,350,000. In my opinion, the F1 and F1 LM will never be replaced. No matter how advanced technology gets a super-car will never be produced so pure and beautiful as the F1. The Legendary Keonigsegg CCXRS

On your average summer Thursday evening here in Long Island, New York, most people are sitting down for dinner with their families and settling in for the night. Not the guys over at the legendary Martino Auto Concepts in Glen Cove, New York. They are busy, along with the local fire department, shutting down town roads, awaiting the arrival of a monster. 

Hundreds of people crowd the streets along with over 100 super-cars; but everyone is waiting—waiting for the arrival of that unusual monster. Not unusual as in weird, but as in rare. How rare you ask? Well, there are more Lamborghini Venenos wandering the streets of the world than this car—and there are only four Venenos world-wide.

The monster isn’t Godzilla or some fictional character or car from a movie. The monster is the one-of-one Keonigsegg CCXRS. At $1.6 million this super-car isn’t cheap, but it isn’t slow either. Packing an outrageous 1,018 horsepower, this is one of the fastest street-legal cars on the planet, rivaling legends such as the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport and the American-made Hennessy Venom GT.

In 1994 at the young age of 22, Swedish native Christian von Keonigsegg decided to follow his dream to build the perfect super-car. Just two years later the Keonigsegg company had launched, and the first prototype, the CC, was on the streets. In 2002, full-series production began on the CC8S, and the company quickly gained respect in the super-car industry. 

Back on the crowded streets of Glen Cove, the CCXRS slowly strolled down the street following Synergy Detailing’s Smurf blue Lamborghini Gallardo. The black paint glistened in the evening sun and roar of the V8 echoed off the surrounding buildings. The numerous Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Maseratis lost all the attention when the CCXRS arrived.

The Keonigsegg CCXR was released at the end of production for the CCX model. The CCXR would be limited to two production vehicles, one being this CCXRS. Both production cars have minor differences, making each vehicle a one-of-one. Powering the beast is a Keonigsegg-built aluminum V8 engine with 4 valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts. With 1,018 horsepower, the super-car screams to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds and will reach speeds just over 250 mph. The chassis is made almost entirely out of carbon fiber. The car has an F1 sequential transmission, allowing for lightning-fast shifts. In total, the CCXRS weighs in at only 2,821 pounds.

The car is 169 inches long, 78.6 inches wide and just 44 inches tall. Steer clear of any speed bumps because with just 3.9 inches  of ground clearance, you are sure to bottom out. Interestingly enough, the CCXRS can actually run off of E85 FlexFuel as well as normal gasoline. An 18.5 gallon fuel tank makes that stat even more impressive. Not only does this exotic offer mind-blowing performance, but it also adds the everyday luxuries that normal cars would have. As stated above, the car is a convertible. The removable glass hard top fits right into the trunk of the vehicle for easy installation and storage. At the car show, the roof was off.

As you see in my pictures the doors of the car are very unique, to say the least. Unlike Lambo doors that strictly just go up, the doors on all Keonigsegg models open in a jaw-dropping way. When open, the doors go out away from the car, lower to the ground and then up. Of course this all happens in one swift motion, and this description does not do it justice. When the doors, hood and trunk are open, you’ll be asking yourself if this is in fact a Transformer.

When the young driver stepped out of the attention-grabbing car, many people started asking questions. The most popular being “ Who are you?” and “ What do you do for a living?”. The driver only released his first name and said he lives on Long Island. He did not mention how he affords the vehicle, but did say he’s owned the car for two years and spent $1.6 million on the vehicle. He also said he once rented a runway to open the Swedish-built super-car and reached 236mph! The owner’s Instagram account shows a lavish lifestyle that includes private jets, and many other exotics, such as a few Ferraris, a Nissan GTR and an Aston Martin.

At the end of the day, this one-of-one Keonigsegg is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen. I saw the newer model, the Agera R, at the New York International Auto Show, but seeing one this up close and personal was truly an experience of a lifetime for any car enthusiast.

GoldRush Rally: Part Two

It’s time to continue the insanity that is GoldRush Rally. I have already shared some of the crazy cars and their wraps in Part One and now it’s time to show some more crazy cars!

One of the newest additions to the streets is the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Martino Auto Concepts took the already stunning Vette and put an immaculate wrap on. The wrap not only showcases real pictures of other exotic cars such as Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s but also show cases the legendary heritage of the all-American Corvette.

Next, we have a very famous and a very unique Lamborghini Aventador named Batventador. The sleek, blacked out Lambo hails from California and participated on the entire GoldRush trip.    The world famous Batman logo is on the hood of the vehicle among other places. A gold ribbon on the hood is in support of cancer awareness as the driver of the car frequently visits the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California. On the both sides of the Lambo there is stunning artwork of kids talking, meant to look like the Batman comic book. The wrap on this car was done by Protective Film Solutions and looks flawless.

Keeping up with the Aventador, next is the most driven and the most famous Lamborghini on the road today. Piloted by the ever so eccentric Team Salamone, Bryan Salamone and his girl Concubine, the chrome Lambo has been featured in many magazines and even the rapper 50 Cent’s new music video. Stationed right here in Long Island, New York, Team Salamone took place in the entire rally. Their Lamborghini Aventador Roadster has a chrome finish over the original Verde Scandal (lime green) paint. The lines of the vehicle, as well as the rims, are out lined in the Verde Scandal color. Along the bottom of the car are gold bricks with names on them. Fans of the Lambo could have donated $100 to get their name on one of these bricks. All proceeds went to help stop Human Trafficking in Africa. There were numerous other GoldRush Rally stickers on the car.

Last but certainly not least is the one of one Bugatti Veyron. Nicknamed ‘Panda’ due to its original white and black color, this Veyron is the only one in the world with that custom color scheme. Valued at over $1 million, the owner doesn’t seem to care to much about the miles he puts on as he took place in the entire rally. Not only does he own this Bugatti, he also owns the white and black Rolls Royce Phantom and the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, both of which took place in the rally. When the exotic rolled down the street it easily stole the attention away from all the other cars. The Bugatti did not have a wrap on the car and only featured GoldRush Rally and sponsor stickers. I do however think that the gold rims are an excellent touch.

GoldRush Takes New York City: Part One

GoldRush Rally- one of the most epic car events of the year. On May 31st over eighty exotic vehicles gathered in the desert city of Las Vegas. Eccentric exotic owners proudly showed off their even more eccentric cars. I had written about GoldRush a few months back, and finally on June 7th, I experienced the rally for just a few hours and wow, what a time!

Now, these aren’t just any plain exotic cars in their usual colors. The cars get wrapped up in crazy decals. The sponsors of the rally get their company name displayed on the vehicles and some cars sport funny sayings and stickers. For anyone cringing at the idea of putting “stickers” on a $500,000 car, both the wraps and stickers are not harmful to the original paint, and can easily be removed. The wraps aren’t cheap either; for example the chrome blue wrap on the Maserati GrandTurismo cost $8,000.

Too add onto the cost of the super-car, the wrap, the fuel prices, GoldRush also offers a few different packages that get you in the line-up. This year to be a part of the full rally- from Vegas to New York City, it is $15,000. The prices do include top of the line stays at hotels such as the Ritz Carlton and epic VIP parties at clubs.

Through GoldRush Rally’s Instagram account I was told the cars would be arriving at 380 Bleeker Street in SoHo, New York City in front of the Robert Graham Boutique at 3pm. The streets were already lined with spectators when I arrived at 2pm. While waiting for the rally to arrive a few very nice vehicles came strolling down the street such as Maserati GrandTurismo, Dodge Charger SuperBee, Ferrari F430 Spider and a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster.

On cue at 3pm loud revving could be heard from the block over and moments later two McLaren 12C’s came rolling down the street with gullwing doors up towards the sky. Both cars were dressed in the same unique wrap that represented the fashion line of Robert Graham, whom I believe was piloting one of the McLarens. Instantly people swarmed the streets rushing to take pictures (and no, the streets were not closed). I should mention that both McLaren’s and all cars participating in the rally sported hearts and stickers that said “Taylor Lynn Foundation: Take a Moment to Give Back”. About fifteen minutes later more revving was heard from the down the street and a Mini Cooper S drove slowly down the road with a gentlemen hanging out the window talking on a PA system getting the crowd ready for what was following. Right behind the small average car came a chrome gold Ferrari 458 Italia. After that the parade continued with numerous Rolls Royce’s, Nissan GTR’s, Audi R8’s, Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s and BMW’s. There were over eighty cars that paraded down the small city street, each vehicle wass blasting music, loudly revving their engines and had beautiful women either driving or hanging out the windows.

Personally, I have never heard or seen anything like this in my life. The exhaust notes perfectly echoed off the city buildings and of course the police quickly came to aide in the traffic jam that was being caused on surrounding roads. I tried my very best to capture the best videos and photos possible and again I will also do my best at describing each vehicle and their wraps.

In the gallery above is a beautiful Ferrari F12 that was driven and sponsored by the people over at Black and White Exotic Rentals in California. As seen, the vehicle is made too look like a police car, with the black and white wrap and the sherifs badge on the door. Also on the side of the car says “To Rent and To Serve”. Although I am not totally sure what color the car is originally the black and white wrap was flawless, along with all the decals of sponsors.

Next is a rare, expensive beast- The Porsche Carrera GT (Photo Gallery Below). 1,270 units were produced from 2004 to 2007. Needless to say the car today can run a buyer every bit of half a million dollars. The car was kept pretty original and had basic decals on it compared to the other vehicles. Im not too sure what company sponsored this vehicle, but personally I think the decision to keep the stickers low-key was great idea. I also love how all the decals are gold. It really pops out against the off white paint and also matches the name of the rally. Watch the videos down below and you will here this Porsche howl.

Coming through next is one of my personal favorites- a Rolls Royce Phantom. The beautiful two-door coupe with the hard top roof was absolutely draw dropping. The off white color seems to be the perfect match for this behemoth vehicle. The black grille makes the front of the vehicle pop-out even more than usual and really made it look like one bad ass car. The gold rims look amazing along with the golden decals. The car really has the perfect amount black added to the paint. I also love the black tinted tail lights. If you’re wondering why the front of the car looks dirty, it’s because those are bugs that the Rolls happen to hit during its long journey. The same owner of this car also owns the draw-dropping white Lamborghini Murcielago LP-670 SV and the ultra-rare one of one “Panda” Bugatti Veyron; both of which will be featured in the next article.

One of the more popular cars of choice on the rally was a Nissan GTR. The GTR pictured in the album below happened to be one of my personal favorites. Going with another police theme, the car was wrapped in black and white, but the best feature was the police lights, sirens and PA system. Leave it to the eccentric owners of the car to be hanging out the window and saying funny things over the PA system. Pay close attention and you’ll notice the matte black roof on the vehicle and on the front bumper it says “Caution: Excessive Boost”. If you’re wondering, the sirens don’t just flash they sound like a cop car as well. I must add that this bad boy had one hell of an exhaust not as well.

Next lets move over to the beautiful blue Lamborghini Gallardo piloted by the guys at Synergy Detailing- a Long Island based detail company. Their Lamborghini was wrapped in Smurf blue, the car is originally orange. Across the windshield says Team New York and again all stickers were in gold. Besides absolutely loving the paint job, I love the black tinted tail lights. Another beautiful touch are the black rims. The contrast blue and black really works well together in my opinion. Team New York partook in the whole entire rally from Vegas back home to New York City. Like any Lamborghini should, this Gallardo had beautiful music coming from the tail pipes!
